Granny’s Corner
I recently spent a week at Eagles Cove Ministry Centre, north of Thunder Bay, Ontario, as the chapel speaker for kid’s camp. I wanted the kids to remember two truths: First, our Creator is awesome, and second, He loves us more than we can imagine. I watched troubled faces transform into hopeful and often joyful faces.
Sadly, I had to come back home after camp. I wish I had a log place in a camp setting where kids could come for a cookie, a discussion or watch a Christian DVD or relax with a good book. I would call it Granny’s Corner. I can see the big rock fireplace, the book shelves lined with fun and interesting Christian books, CDs and DVDs. I can smell the cookies baking and hear the children chattering.
I can’t duck and run in paintball like some of the young adult cabin leaders. I can’t even get my knees to cooperate with paddling a canoe, but I would love to share what I’ve learned about God. I have a story to tell, but I also appreciate the rich resources available to us through organizations such as Indian Life, NCEM, local Christian bookstores, Focus on the Family and Christian Books (found on the Internet). There are thousands of resources for study, inspiration or simple enjoyment.
I used some of these resources at camp. The kids listened intently to Albert Tait’s story of finding new life in Jesus, as told by Owen Salway in The Lonely Search. Our worship leaders used kid’s praise DVDs that inspired us with God’s greatness.
We watched DVDs related to God’s amazing science. One DVD showed life on a “pale blue dot,” a view of earth from billions of miles away. I recently watched two DVDs by Louis Giglio called Indescribable and How Great is Our God. Such resources help sort out what is really important.
One of my favorite Bible study tools is Ray vander Laan’s DVD series, That the World May Know, put out by Focus on the Family. The photography and lessons are interesting and enlightening.
Francis Frangipane has inspired, comforted and mentored me through his books. He has a very inexpensive internet ministry course called In Christ’s Image. It isn’t religious; it is life-changing.
I thank God for providing such resources to help us through these difficult days when educators tell us that there is no Creator, and when society says that self will brings fulfillment. I may not be able to have Granny’s Corner right now, but I hope you will enjoy some of the resources available and then share them with others, especially the younger generation. I met great kids at camp. I know that one day, with a little mentoring, care and prayer; they could be strong leaders for our nation.

Hello Ken and the Eagle Bay Staff:

Many thanks for your timely gesture!!  If you have regularly tuned in to the National Weather Report you will be aware that winter continues in B C.  Single digit temperatures mixed with significant snow seems to be our lot this year.  Speaking of winter weather. Winnipeg has apparently had some very severe cold weather, particularly when the wind chill is factored in.  This must have compelled the Eagle Bay Staff to postpone  attempts to remove and replace lock hardware.  No doubt there is no shortage of indoor projects in need of regular attention during the “off season”. Hopefully the Staff too will have discovered long ago the value of a warm SCA scarf, particularly this time of year.  Thank you again for supplementing our cold season stock…

You may or not be aware that I grew up in the Prince George area of B C  where +/ – 50 degrees of frost were not unusual.  But this did not deter Shantymen John Bergstrom and Cecil Carter.  These faithful servants would always keep to their schedules regardless of low temperatures, bringing the Good News to the Travers Family and many others in that isolated part of the Province.  English was not John’s birth language but his guitar did not seem to mind as his Norwegian accent came through loud and clear as he sang with us the joyful songs of the blessed. In due course the Bergstrom’s eldest son Ron became my best buddy after we both completed High School.  We have had the joy of continuing to sustain and enhance our friendship through the “miracle” of email.  He and his wife of more than 45 years are still in Ministry in the Community of Niagara Falls, where Jen and I had opportunity to connect with them in the Spring of 2006.

Because of these long-standing connections with SCA we are delighted to have been able to come alongside Eagle Bay with the resources that God has provided out of His Amazing Storehouse!  Jen and I are so very pleased to acknowledge in this small way His Lovingkindness and Tender Mercies.

May Eagle Bay continue to be used for many more years “to the Praise of His Glory”.  If it is within His Will and Purpose perhaps  one day the Lord will enable us to visit Hilbre and rejoice with you firsthand in your Ministry to Children and Families.

Until then may God’s Richest Blessings rest  on  you and yours. Love and  prayers from Jen and Denis Travers
