Operations

SCA International is a not-for-profit, non-denominational Christian ministry. Ministry Centres and Field Missionaries depend upon the Lord and His people for prayer and financial support.

PRESIDENT’S ORGANIZATION REPORT 2011

The Audience of One

At the very top of our organization and permeating throughout its structure, is the Lord Jesus Christ. It is on His behalf we minister and serve, and under whose authority and leadership we exist and operate, as He alone reigns Supreme. Isaiah 22 speaks of all the humanly possible preparations undertaken to fortify Jerusalem and prevent it from being captured. In verse 11, however, the writer says, “… but you have not looked unto the Maker thereof, neither had respect unto Him that fashioned it long ago.” It is our deep desire that every one involved in SCA approach his/her individual part, as well as our collective ministry, in such a way that this verse would never be said of us.
We also believe that in our attempt to satisfy “the Audience of One”, God has given us a structure of authority, partly driven by our belief that He wants us to operate with order, and partly driven by the laws of the land that govern charitable organizations such as SCA. To this structure, we all must adhere.

What SCA International Is

SCA International is an incorporated charitable organization registered in both Canada and the United States. It currently operates only in Canada, but it is approved to grant Charitable Organization Tax Receipts to eligible donors for gifts received both in Canada and from the United States.
SCA International is an Evangelical Mission whose main purpose is to share the Good News (the Gospel) of Jesus Christ with those in Canada that do not have easy access to hearing such Good News. By definition then, we started in isolated areas and ministered to isolated individuals (such as loggers and fishermen) and related groups. In so doing, a good part of our ministry gravitated over time towards the needs of, and ministry among, Canada’s First Peoples, in particular the First Nations in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario (as compared to the Metis or the Inuits — the other two First Peoples groups of Canada.)
SCA International, formerly Shantymen Christian Association, began in 1906 and today has several Field Missionaries who continue to work in unique ministries, as well as Missionaries that serve as part of a team at one of our four year-round MCs.

SCA International Corporation

Article One of our Bylaws defines the Corporation of SCA as follows:

WHEREAS by Letters Patent issued under the ACT and dated the 20th day of December 1939, as amended by Supplementary Letters Patent dated the 1st day of August, 1985 and the 26th day of November, 1996, and the 27th day of May 2005, the CORPORATION was incorporated”
As of June 24, 2011, the date of the Annual General Meeting, SCA had seventeen (17) active Corporation members.

SCA Board of Directors

Our bylaws make the following references with respect to a Board of Directors:
” The affairs of the CORPORATION shall be managed by a BOARD composed of a minimum of three (3) DIRECTORS and a maximum of twelve (12) DIRECTORS to whom one (1) member shall be an ex officio DIRECTOR”
This Board of Directors has Officers — in particular, a Chair, Vice-chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. There are six committees chaired by a Board member: Financial/Audi; Nominating; Policy; Ministry; Promotion; Training. It has the right to add additional officers and additional board committees. Currently, there are ten board members. The Board appoints the President.

SCA Honourary Life Members

From our by-laws:
“From time to time, the BOARD may admit for life or lesser term without payment of any fee or assessment as an Honourary Member a person who, in the opinion of the BOARD has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the CORPORATION.”
Currently SCA has two Honourary Life Members.

SCA President

The President oversees the entire operation of SCA International and reports to the Board of Directors as a single entity. All missionaries, staff and contractors, consultants, and volunteers report either directly (or indirectly through others) to the President.

SCA Missionaries

Currently SCA has two groups of missionaries: Field Missionaries (FMs) and Ministry Centre Missionaries (MCMs). We have eight FMs and six MCMs working year-round at one of our centres.

The eight FMs report directly to the President. Of the six MCMs, three are MC Directors (one MC Director position is vacant). These positions report directly to the President. The balance of the MCMs report to their respective MC Director and indirectly to the President.

SCA Staff and Contractors

There are currently three other individuals working out of Head Office reporting to the President. In alphabetical order, they are:

  • Accountant (contract employee)
  • Finance Administrator
  • Office Administrator

SCA Consultants

From time to time, SCA or the SCA Board may decide to engage the services of a consultant or consulting firm with very special expertise. These individuals, unless they are dealing with matters pertaining to the performance of the President, consider the President to be their direct client. In the past, SCA has engaged the services of a Fundraising Consulting firm and an independent Foundation Financing consultant for two short-term projects. Currently SCA has a Planned Giving Manager & Registered Life Broker partnering with us.

SCA Volunteers

SCA is continually blessed with the work of volunteers. For example, individuals come in monthly to process our receipts to donors, while others work at/with our MCs across the country year-round, and in particular during the summer camp programs. Technically these individuals are the responsibility of SCA and thus the President. In reality, however, SCA individuals for whom they are carrying out specific tasks, normally oversee such persons.
Currently SCA also has a Planned Giving Manager who volunteers his services with us.  He is also a Registered Life Broker (will be linked) available to assist our donors.

SCA Volunteer Committees

Some MCs have local volunteer committees or church liaison committees. These report to the individual MC Director and have no authoritative powers. They provide prayer support, human resources, financial and fundraising support, encouragement, and advice and guidance to the local MC Director and through him, the staff. Without these committees, the MCs that engage such members of the local Christian community would not be able to accomplish as much as they do for the Kingdom.

PRESIDENT’S NOTE REGARDING SCA EXPENDITURES 2009:

There has been much in the news lately with regard to how charities spend their money.  There is a big push on for example to limit salaries paid to people in charitable work.  There is also a big push to have charities list the top five paid positions in their organization.  So far, we are not required by either law or by our membership in the Canada Council of Christian Charities (CCCC’s) to do so. But we at SCA want to be as transparent as possible as well as being ahead of the norm in this regard. To that end, we are pleased to advise all interested parties of the following information:

As the first five figures below indicate, our Missionaries currently manage meagerly on very limited support.  It is our prayer that as the Lord moves our partners to support this ministry, we will be able to report salaries which are much more in keeping with what it takes to raise a family in Canada these days.

Top Five Individual Salaries (Plus 1) for the whole of 2009 were as follows:

1. $31,606
2. $30,333
3. $29,700
4. $27,840
5. $27,700
6. $26,320*

* The President’s position is not full-time but sufficient hours are worked so as the Ministry is overseen and managed as required by the Board and as the organization can afford.  The figure shown indicates the amount earned in 2009.  There are no other perquisites for this position.   There are no pension or health plans for any of the positions.  Other missionaries earned less than all these amounts.

No monies were spent for the assistance of external fundraising consultants or similar services.

SCA is well below what most Christian Charitable organizations and churches pay their staff.  We thank you for your continued prayers, support, and partnerships.  And we welcome your questions and comments.  Please send them directly to me by email: ken@scainternational.org or call our office and ask to speak with me.

In His Service with you,
Ken B. Godevenos, President
